Popcorn bubble wrap is a fascinating idle pass time, isn't it? Admit it, some of your fondest childhood memories are of you popcorn away at the linen of the stuff with absorbed interest, right? In these treasured idle moments did you ever wonder how that bubble wrap is made? Or how these perfect little pockets of air are trapped between the plastic just for your popcorn pleasure? Keep reading to find out exactly how it's all done.
First, granules of plastic are closely spread onto a heated conveyor belt. This warms the plastic grains to a pliable consistency, though they still hold their shape. Think of these items of plastic-like heated chocolate chips; even when they are hot they still stay the same shape unless upset, at which point they become liquid. So the warm plastic grains pass under a roller which squashes them all flat. During this squashing, the individual items of plastic get melded together and thin, clear linen of plastic emerges as opposed to this of the roller.
Now, two of these sheets are used for making Restauracja Warzawa Śródmieście. You have the actual bubbles and the other acts as a cover to close the air in. To form the bubbles, the first linen is draped around a cylindrical bar with little bubble-formed indentations in it. As the plastic is held taut on the storage container, suction drags it into each little hole, by using the bubbles by extending plastic into the dings and dents. This is a lot like when you poke your finger into taut linen of plastic wrap and leave a dimple.
Finally, the second linen of plastic is laid on top of the first, holding the air in the bubbles between them. A blast of hot air elephant seals the two sheets together into a single piece and voila! bubble wrap! The manufacturing plant packages the bubble wrap (no filling required there) and boats it off. The many companies and businesses that make use of this product every day receive it and package their items in it to protect them from damage in transit.
So next time a large package gets to your door and you tear it open to find it filled with bubble wrap, think back to the manufacturing plant where that filling was made. And while you're partaking your inner child by playing with your deafening improvised toy, remember the easy process that created this wonderfully amusing material. Happy popcorn!
